Everything you need for Sunday May 24 online worship
Preparations for Worship:
- Do your best to eliminate distractions like the phone, TV, etc.
- Worship actively! Whether you are by yourself or with others, try reading the parts of the service aloud (responses, lessons, and prayers).
- This service is for children too. Help them participate. Ask those who have that ability to read a prayer or lesson aloud. Take a moment to describe what’s happening. Ask questions. Encourage little ones to draw what they are hearing while you all listen. Unlike our more typical Sunday worship at church, you can pause at any time for questions and discussion.
- Before you begin, load each of the videos below. (You might first have to get past a distracting ad.)
- Pause for a moment of quiet meditation. Then pray:
“Heavenly Father, I have come to worship you. Draw near to me in your gracious Word, and assure me of your loving kindness. Curb my wandering thoughts, that with undivided attention I may hear your voice and speak your praise. Through Jesus Christ. Amen.”
CONFESSION OF SINS
The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. And also with you.
We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.
Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.
God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will. Amen.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray. Almighty God, your Son our Savior was taken up in glory and intercedes for us at your right hand. Through your living and abiding Word, give us hearts to know him and faith to follow where he has gone; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
FIRST LESSON – 1 SAMUEL 1:21-28
21This man Elkanah and his entire household went up to offer the yearly sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow. 22But Hannah did not go up with them, because she told her husband, “Not until the child is weaned. Then I will bring him, so that he can appear before the Lord and remain there permanently.” 23Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Do whatever you think is best. Wait until you have weaned him. Yes, then the Lord will establish his word.” So the woman stayed at home, and she nursed her son until she was ready to wean him. 24When she had weaned him, she took him up with her. She also took a three-year-old bull, twenty quarts of flour, and a container of wine, and she brought him to the house of the Lord in Shiloh. The boy was still young. 25When they had killed the bull, they presented the child to Eli. 26She said, “Excuse me, my lord. As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood next to you here, praying to the Lord. 27I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked for. 28So now I have also dedicated him to the Lord. As long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord.” Then he worshipped the Lord there.
SECOND LESSON – 2 CORINTHIANS 4:13-18
13Since we have that same spirit of faith, which corresponds to what is written: “I believed; therefore, I have spoken,” we also believe, and therefore we speak. 14For we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will also raise us with Jesus and bring us (together with you) into his presence. 15In fact, all this is for your benefit, so that as grace increases, it will overflow to the glory of God, as more and more people give thanks. 16Therefore we are not discouraged. But even if our outer self is wasting away, yet our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17Yes, our momentary, light trouble produces for us an eternal weight of glory that is far beyond any comparison. 18We are not focusing on what is seen, but on what is not seen. For the things that are seen are temporary, but the things that are not seen are eternal.
DEVOTION
CONFESSION OF FAITH – APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Lord, You have promised not to abandon Your people but to be with us always.
Grant us grace to hear Your Word with faith and receive Your Holy Sacrament with repentant hearts, and to keep what we hear and receive upon our lips in holy lives.
Lord, You have delivered the saints from fiery trial and raised up the martyr from the darkness of death to everlasting life.
Give us courage, that we may give bold witness to the truth in our own day and proclaim Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth.
Lord, You have pledged to us Your Spirit and promised to supply Your Church with pastors who will preach and teach Your Word. Bless those who received calls from our ministerial education schools this week, new pastors and teachers.
Give us ears to hear and hearts to believe Your Word. Raise up those who will serve Your Church in generations to come, that we may never be without the aid of those to serve us in Your name.
Lord, You have compassion upon all who suffer. Give grace to the sick, to those with mental illness, to the dying in their last hours and to those who grieve. Hear us especially for those we name in our hearts before You.
Grant them patience in their afflictions, and deliver them according to Your gracious will.
Lord, You are the source of all wisdom and knowledge. Bless those who teach, those who learn and especially those who graduate this year. Be the hope of those whose plans have been disappointed, and grant that all graduates would find good employment.
Guide them in the pursuit of Your Word and truth, to live honorable lives in worthy vocations, that in all things You may be glorified.
Lord, we rejoice in the Savior’s promise to guard the people who wear Your name by Baptism and faith. Until we are with You in Your presence forevermore, guard us and grant us power to trust in You; through Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray…
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
THE LORD’S BLESSINGS
Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness.
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. Amen.
