Everything you need for August 28 online worship.
Preparations for Worship:
- Do your best to eliminate distractions like the phone, TV, etc.
- Worship actively! Whether you are by yourself or with others, try reading the parts of the service aloud (responses, lessons, and prayers).
- This service is for children too. Help them participate. Ask those who have that ability to read a prayer or lesson aloud. Take a moment to describe what’s happening. Ask questions. Encourage little ones to draw what they are hearing while you all listen. Unlike our more typical Sunday worship at church, you can pause at any time for questions and discussion.
- Before you begin, load each of the videos below. (You might first have to get past a distracting ad.)
- Pause for a moment of quiet meditation. Then pray:
“Heavenly Father, I have come to worship you. Draw near to me in your gracious Word, and assure me of your loving kindness. Curb my wandering thoughts, that with undivided attention I may hear your voice and speak your praise. Through Jesus Christ. Amen.”
PRAYER OF THE DAY
O Lord of grace and mercy, teach us by your Holy Spirit to follow the example of your Son in true humility, that we may withstand the temptations of the devil and with pure hearts and minds avoid ungodly pride; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
LESSON – PROVERBS 25:6-7
6Do not honor yourself in a king’s presence.
Do not stand in a place reserved for great people,
7because it is better to be told, “Come up here,”
than for you to be humiliated before a ruler
whom your eyes have seen.
GOSPEL – LUKE 14:1, 7-14
One Sabbath day, when Jesus went into the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat bread, they were watching him closely.
7When he noticed how they were selecting the places of honor, he told the invited guests a parable. 8“When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline in the place of honor, or perhaps someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by him. 9The one who invited both of you may come and tell you, ‘Give this man your place.’ Then you will begin, with shame, to take the lowest place. 10“But when you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will tell you, ‘Friend, move up to a higher place.’ Then you will have honor in the presence of all who are reclining at the table with you. 11“Yes, everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” 12He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you make a dinner or a supper, do not invite your friends, or your brothers, or your relatives, or rich neighbors, so that perhaps they may also return the favor and pay you back. 13“But when you make a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. Certainly, you will be repaid in the resurrection of the righteous.”
DEVOTION – JAMES 2:1-13

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Heavenly Father, through the humiliation of Your Son, You have called us to a place at Your heavenly table.
Teach us to treasure this place of honor, and so to spurn the foolish honors of this world.
God of justice, You exalt the humble and humble the proud in Your own appointed time. We commend to You the elected officials of our land.
Grant them the desire to govern as though serving, and give them wisdom and courage to know what is right and to follow it.
O Lord, grant peace and healing according to Your will to the sick, the suffering, those troubled in mind, those suffering depression, and those with chronic illness and pain especially Lori DeJarnett’s aunt dealing with side effects from cancer treatment, family of a friend of the DeJarnett family who died last week, and all those whom we lift before You in our hearts now.
Thank you for the comfort and hope you give in the face of all life’s challenges and sufferings. Give peace to these we pray for now in Christ.
Lord Jesus, you said that in heaven there will be a multitude of people from every nation, tribe, people, and language. We praise you that we already get to see this amazing phenomenon play out in our churches today including at Hope Lutheran Church in Toronto, Canada. Thanks for giving this mission unity and joy in their faith.
May their international connections help them to reach family and friends across the world with your gospel spoken by trusted lips.
Merciful God, You call on us to practice brotherly love, to show hospitality to strangers and to remember all those in need. We come to You confident that You will not leave us nor forsake us, but will grant us all that we need for this body and life.
Bestow on us the full riches of Your grace for all the situations and circumstances in which Your people dwell.
Remembering that here we have no abiding city but that heaven is our home, give us Your aid, that we may by true faith and godly life prepare for the coming of our Savior, multiplying Your mercy by loving our neighbor in need; through Jesus who taught us to pray…
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to this new day. Defend us with your mighty power, and grant that this day we neither fall into sin nor run into any kind of danger; and in all we do, direct us to what is right in your sight, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.
Let us praise the Lord. Thanks be to God.
THE LORD’S BLESSING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
