Everything you need for August 27 online worship.
Preparations for Worship:
- Do your best to eliminate distractions like the phone, TV, etc.
- Worship actively! Whether you are by yourself or with others, try reading the parts of the service aloud (responses, lessons, and prayers).
- This service is for children too. Help them participate. Ask those who have that ability to read a prayer or lesson aloud. Take a moment to describe what’s happening. Ask questions. Encourage little ones to draw what they are hearing while you all listen. Unlike our more typical Sunday worship at church, you can pause at any time for questions and discussion.
- Before you begin, load each of the videos below. (You might first have to get past a distracting ad.)
- Pause for a moment of quiet meditation. Then pray:
“Heavenly Father, I have come to worship you. Draw near to me in your gracious Word, and assure me of your loving kindness. Curb my wandering thoughts, that with undivided attention I may hear your voice and speak your praise. Through Jesus Christ. Amen.”
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Almighty God, whom to know is everlasting life, grant us to know your Son, Jesus, to be the way, the truth, and the life that we may boldly confess him to be the Christ and steadfastly walk in the way that leads to life eternal; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
LESSON – ROMANS 10:5-13
5Indeed, Moses writes this about the righteousness that comes by the law: “The one who does these things will live by them.” 6But the righteousness that comes by faith speaks like this: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7“or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith that we are proclaiming. 9Certainly, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For it is with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and it is with the mouth that a person confesses, resulting in salvation. 11For Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12So there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord is Lord of all, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13Yes, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
GOSPEL – MATTHEW 16:13-20
13When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14They said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15He said to them, “But you, who do you say that I am?”
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not overpower it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20Then he commanded the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Almighty God, from You and through You and to You are all things. You have built Your Church on the confession of the Gospel and have promised that the gates of hell will not overcome it.
To Your Church throughout the world grant the faith and courage to confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Lord God Almighty, You transform Your Church by the Holy Spirit so that she does not conform to the world.
Draw forth from Your people their proclamation of thanksgiving, that they may tell of all Your wondrous deeds.
O Lord, grant that the Office of the Keys may be honored among us, in order that we may confess our sin and be absolved in the name of Christ.
As You have so graciously forgiven us, grant that we may extend this grace by forgiving others.
Heavenly Father, care for all families, children, single adults and youth, that they might steadfastly walk in the way that leads to life eternal.
Grant an increase in wisdom and grace to all who teach and learn.
Lord of the nations, it is your desire to see the message of the gospel reach the ends of the earth. Bless the plans of the Hmong Fellowship Church in Vietnam and grant success to the efforts of the missionaries, pastors, and members as they carry out your Great Commission. We thank you for the building that you have provided where present and future generations can study the Scriptures. Use the Theological Education Center to train leaders who can share your grace and peace with the Hmong people.
We boldly make this request for their outreach work and ours in the name of Jesus.
Heavenly Father, care for all victims of disaster, for those stricken by illness or infirmity, for the aged and infirm, for the grieving and for those near death. Especially show Your steadfast love to Denise Falewitch’s aunt who has entered hospice with cancer.
Grant healing and comfort as you will in your grace.
From You and through You and to You are all things! To You, O Father, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, be glory now and forever.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
